THE YOUNG LEWISHAM PROJECT.
The Young Lewisham Project offers kids in south east London the chance to learn and experience a range of vocational activities including carpentry, bicycle maintenance and gardening, but by far the most popular is motorbike mechanics. It might have something to do with the small fleet of trail bikes that they get to work on and ride. The chance to ride only comes once they have helped maintain, repair and prepare them. They also have the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised Accreditation.
To help fund this great facility, a group of eight foolhardy people are going to enter a 24-hour cycle race at the legendary Le Mans Bugatti Circuit. For a couple of us, it was an offer we could not refuse. We had been there many times before, an annual sojourn to watch the 24-hour motorbike race. This would be our only chance to race around the track where we had watched those riders, so dramatically, through the day and night.
Our race will not be so spectacular but none the less we are looking forward to testing ourselves around the famous circuit. Of course, we may not feel that way at four in the morning and that little slope that goes up to the Dunlop Bridge will probably turn into a mountain each lap.
