100 years of Scout
The Indian Appaloosa
Indian Motorcycle introduced a new bike on Friday, the Appaloosa. Named after a famously-fast American horse breed, the Appaloosa celebrates the 100-year anniversary of the Indian Scout. It was built by Workhorse Speedshop, for Indian to race in the Factory class of the Sultans of Sprint.
At its base, the Appaloosa is a 1200cc Indian Scout. According to Workhorse Speedshop, it took over 700 hours to make. The aluminium bodywork alone taking Workhorse’s Brice Hennebert seven weeks to shape. As it is designed for racing, it uses quarter-turn fastenings throughout, so the fairing can come off easily for maintenance.
The original fuel tank has been narrowed and made into a cover for a 2.5-litre fuel cell – just enough for sprints. It’s fitted with a bespoke titanium exhaust. And with the addition of a nitrous oxide system, direct intake, a racing ECU and a Power Commander, power is increased from 100 up to 130 hp.
The drive belt has been swapped up for a chain and a quick-shifter added to help the rider make fast gear changes. A stretched-aluminium swingarm is fitted alongside fully-adjustable Öhlins suspension. There’s a new sub-frame, footpegs and lower bars, which help the riding position.
To add to the excitement, Triumph revealed on Friday the racer was to be Randy Mamola, who has come second in four GP racing championships. Also noted was that Mamola would ride #19, another nod to the 1919-2019 Scout history.
The first of the Sultans of Sprint races took place in Italy over the weekend. The second and third races in France and Germany are still to come.
For those who wish to see the bike, it will be on display at Bike Shed in May and at Wheels and Waves festival in June.
