German company BMW began in 1921, producing engines for other motorcycle manufacturers, starting BMW Motorrad in its own right, making its own motorbikes, in 1923. The first machine was the BMW R 32 with it's characteristic Boxer-twin engine. Since then BMW has gone on to produce many different models and engine types.
