MSX125 - Honda Grom Bike of the week

Good things come in small packages

Does size matter?  Well small is beautiful in the case of the little Honda MSX125 (Mini Street X-treme) AKA Honda Grom.

This is our tame wemoto MSX125!
Appearing on the scene in 2013, this little single cylinder minimoto became an overnight favourite. Not only is it a well built and road worthy mini machine with many full sized motorcycle parts, but it also has tiny film star good looks and comes in groovy colours. Add to that the fact that it is super customisable, with lots of available aftermarket parts, and this diminutive Honda has more than fulfilled its early promise.

Despite being wee the MSX125 is a pretty comfortable bike, even for a full sized human, and can take a pillion without too much stress. It’s a really fun little bike to ride with great handling, and thus appeals to many riders both great and small. Perhaps it falls down a bit when up against that other denizen of the urban streets the scooter, on storage and carrying capability, but it more than makes up for this with it’s sporty manoeuvrability in traffic.

It’s fuel economy is good too - a purported 125 mpg, with a claimed top speed of 70 mph. Perhaps the top speed was tested on the downslope of Ben Nevis with a following wind but having said that it is a small simple air-cooled bike without a lot of deadweight to carry. Has anyone out there got one or tried one and if so what top speed have you achieved, is it a force 9 - strong gale 47/54mph or a force 11 - storm force 64/73mph? We’re thinking stick to a force 9 to have a comfortable nippy ride through town.

Speed is not really the USP anyway for the MSX125. A great little city bike economical and nippy and really designed more for backroads and in town with its tidy little 1,200 wheelbase and 12in Tyres.

What’s not to like?

Only really 7 years old, Groms are already the subject of abiding love for the owners clubs which have arisen everywhere to fete them and are a popular machine for new riders. With a light yet sturdy manoeuvrability which is just great fun, it’s hard not to like this cheeky little motorcycle. Any other fans out there?
